What is Hate Crime?
A Hate Crime or Incident is any behaviour that someone thinks was caused by hatred of race, religion or faith, sexual orientation or gender identity or disability.
Hate Crime can be:
- Name calling
- Arson/fire
- Graffiti or writing
- Attacks or violence
- Damage such as to your house or car
Who can use the Stop Hate Line?
Anyone affected by Hate Crime can contact the Stop Hate Line to communicate with a trained operator at any time of day or night. Callers can report incidents, get information on what help is available, access support, or just talk about an experience of Hate Crime. People who contact the Stop Hate Line can remain anonymous if they wish, and their contact details will only be shared with their consent.
Victims
The Stop Hate Line provides a confidential 24 hour alternative to reporting directly to the Police. Helpline operators deal with immediate needs, record information, determine what further support the victim/witness/third-party requires, and provide information about local support services, including Hunts Mind.
Witnesses
The Stop Hate Line can also be used to report incidents people witness, even if they do not have full details or were not themselves the victim.
Third Parties
Calls can be made on behalf of victims, eg by Housing Officers, teachers, or family members. Personal details will only be taken if the victim has given consent. Hunts Mind will support anybody seeking assistance in making a call to the helpline.
Hearing impaired callers and callers who want to speak other languages
All Stop Hate Line operators are trained to use the Text Relay (Type Talk) system. A number of Stop Hate Line operators speak community languages. If a caller wants to speak a language other than English, they need to tell the operator in English their name, phone number and the name of the language they speak. An interpreter will then call them back, usually within 72 hours.
A booklet providing details of the Stop Hate UK helpline in different languages is available from Hunts Mind’s office.
